During the week of September 26 to October 2, some of the key points that were to be learned in the Independent Study Mentorship class was researching the professional career and the topic more in depth, continuing to make phone calls to potential mentors for brief informational interviews, and also reviewing proper etiquette in the Frisco Independent School District ISM Business Symposium at Independence High School, The first accomplishment achieved this week was successfully obtaining a four interviews with cardiothoracic surgeons at the Baylor Heart Hospital in Plano. A few of the secretaries called back and currently we are working on scheduling dates and times for these brief informational interviews. The reason that this is an accomplishment is because the location and doctors that I was most specifically looking to be my mentor I got a potential interview with. Also, along with the interviews I realize that I have become more fluent in the speech of the interview and talking with business professionals. Lastly, the Calls and Correspondent sheet has been updated with all the latest activity, and also a more established set of rules has been put in place of the specificity of the items written on the sheet. This week while researching about cardiothoracic surgery, I came upon some of the best hospitals that treat cardiothoracic patients. A different route was taken this week and rather than researching about the topic itself, I researched about hospitals and programs that should potentially be aimed for in the future. The third objective of this week was to begin understanding basic etiquette for the District business symposium that was being conducted at Independence high school the following week. At this symposium, various different professionals, not necessarily your subject field, will be there to conduct brief mock interviews as well as creating a professional network The primary purpose is to loosen up and meet new people and connect through this amazing opportunity at exploring a potential career field, and also being able to talk to working businessman and improving your professional speech. Some of the challenges that were faced over this week was building confidence to contact the professionals, and also getting rejected. Although getting rejected feels disheartening, it is part of the learning process, and a greater respect for those in the medical work are gained. Some things that will be improved this following week is more confidence, reducing the use of “ums” and “ahhs”, and also conversing with professionals in a conversational tone rather than reading off of a script. Lastly, I hope to learn a new procedure in cardiothoracic surgery.
