During the week of February 6 to February 12, I started to brainstorm and write a rough draft proposal for my final product, ask my mentor for advice on the proposal rough draft, and also schedule my first mentor visit. By writing the proposal, I believe that I have grown as a writer and also become more creative, which makes me constantly challenge myself and step out of my comfort zone. Although there is always room for improvement, I believe that for the first rough draft, my product proposal is something that can work and also benefit the community. The objective of my product proposal is to create an artificial aorta with the use of synthetic materials that is significantly cheaper in expense so that lower and middle income families can afford treatment such as aortic valve replacements, etc. I believe that this product will greatly impact the community, and to implement it, I will work with my mentor and create a prototype of the actual valve. This is one of the main achievements this week because the product that I am trying to produce may potentially be an alternative route to surgeries such as aortic valve replacements and other procedures. Although coming up with the proposal was an achievement, it was also a struggle. I was constantly asking myself: How can I do this? How can I find the materials to make the valve? What materials should I use? What are some aspects that I need to look out for so that this product can actually work in the human body? These are all questions that through research and the help of my mentor, I should be able to answer. In the future, I hope to start going on more mentor visits and start to observe surgery, as well as begin to look for the synthetic materials for my aortic valve prototype. I will do so by starting to set personal goals for myself, and also, instead of keeping the blind promise of stopping procrastination, I will actually start to work on assessments and interviews well before the due dates. The inspiration for eliminating procrastination in the future came from two students who are in Frisco High School’s ISM program. They both are taking AP courses, have jobs, and are involved in multiple extracurricular activities, and they still manage to finish their work and expand their knowledge on the field before the due dates of their assignments come close. After looking at their example and seeing the resemblance in myself, I hope to follow them and shape myself to become just as efficient.
