During the week of September 18 to 24, the key highlights of the Independent Study and Mentorship class included finalizing my resume rough draft, contacting multiple professionals, and completing another mentor observation reflection for my fourth assessment.

Some of the main accomplishments of this week included the creation of my resume and also completing the fourth assessment of the ISM 2 program. Previously, the resume that I had was very bland and didn’t reflect my topic or personality in any way. My new resume is bold and colorful, which I believe is a good summary of my achievements that I can use for the purposes of ISM and also college applications. Along with the resume, the assessment that I completed consisted of an ascending aortic aneurysm removal followed by an aortic valve replacement reflection. With this reflection, I was able to improve my knowledge by focusing on details of the surgery, which is different from the previous times that I observed this procedure, where I would focus on the procedure as a whole.

Along with achievements, the struggle that I faced this week was trying to obtain interviews. Since I contacted most of the Cardiothoracic surgeons in the DFW metroplex last year, finding new professionals is difficult as their practices are located at least 25 miles away from Reedy High School. I am thinking about asking for a few over the phone interviews this year to help with the travel distances.

In the following week, I hope to complete my final draft of the resume as well as begin brainstorming ideas for my original work. Also, I would like to research a new cardiothoracic surgical condition for this week’s assessment.
