During the week of October 30 to November 5, the main events that occurred included the completion of my fourth research assessment, brainstorming ideas for my original work, and practicing mouth and lip exercises in preparation for the research speech, which will be presented to the class on November 10.

The fourth research assessment of my second year of the Independent Study and Mentorship journey included analyzing various different kinds of sutures. There was a well established connection with the multiple surgical observations I conducted with the different sutures that I read about. I was able to recognize the use of many simple interrupted sutures during the Dr. Brinkman’s operations of various aortic heart diseases and conditions. I realized that simple suturing skills provide the foundational basis for medical professionals and focuses on poise, preciseness, and attention to detail. After reading this article and writing an assessment, I believe that I have begun to learn more about how to suture, and has given me motivation to pursue my original work project of performing suture skills.

Along with these accomplishments, I am facing some difficulties getting more informational interviews as well as getting approval from Baylor Heart Hospital to continue my mentorship with Dr. Brinkman. Human resources is experiencing major delays in in processing my observation paperwork, so I will be contacting them to check on my status this week.

In the upcoming week, I hope to begin drafting my original work proposal as well as research more about rare cardiothoracic surgical procedures. Also, I would like to begin working on my research speech.
